Thomas set to prove himself

In his junior season at Jim Hill (Miss.) High School, 6-foot-6 and 180-pound guard Fred Thomas was one of the top players in the Jackson metro area and averaged 20 points, 6.3 boards and 3.2 assists a game. This spring, Thomas is again proving that he is among the top 2012 prospects in the Magnolia State.
Playing with the AAU-affiliated Southern Phenoms and Byram Ballers, Thomas is remaining active on the court and leaving an impression.

"It's been going pretty good," said Thomas. "We had a tournament in Arkansas and Indiana and I feel I played good in both of those. But I want to keep working on getting better and making sure my weaknesses are no longer weaknesses. We still have tournaments in Atlanta an Ohio and it's great playing with two teams. I think it's going good and I am working to get noticed. I am also working on having a post-up game and that is my main focus on the court right now."
Despite his schedule, Thomas added he his focus will also be in the class room this summer.
"But really, my main focus this summer is going to be getting my grades right," said Thomas. "I will still be going to a couple of camps and I was just invited to one of LeBron James' camps. But I will be in summer school to make sure my grades are in order."
And some schools of late have taken noticed of his play thus far on the AAU circuit. Before his junior season ended, Thomas held two scholarship offers but more schools have started to enter the picture.
"I have the offers from Mississippi State and UTEP and they are still the main ones recruiting me," said Thomas. "I am also getting interest from Georgia, Alabama, DePaul, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Georgia State and Tennessee-Chattanooga."
Yet like much of his recruitment, Thomas still has the Bulldogs on top of his list.
"Things are still going great with Mississippi State," said Thomas. "I call them and check in with them pretty much every day. I just feel comfortable with them and my family also feels comfortable with Mississippi State. I kinda want to stay close to home and I want to make sure I do what is best for me and my family. I am still kinda taking things slow because I am really focused on my grades first and that is the most important thing."
