There couldn't be a more perfect time for #20 Mississippi State (26-15, 10-8) to play a couple of weaker opponents to get things back on track on the mound, at the plate and in the win column as they did just that with a perfect 4-0 week to stay in the hunt in the SEC now tied for third and just two games back from the lead.
State was coming off of back-to-back series losses to LSU and Ole Miss as they dropped five out of six. The bats woke up this week with lineups shuffled and the pitching staff was mostly on point with the exception of a rough fifth inning on Sunday that seemed to have been the blow that would keep MSU from the sweep. Instead, the Bulldogs looked more like last year's squad with two runs in the ninth to tie and two more in the 11th to win and sweep Missouri.
MSU now looks to keep their momentum going with a big matchup later tonight against #11 Ole Miss, the team that beat MSU by a combined 15 runs in two wins last weekend. The Rebels are coming off of a series loss against LSU and are looking for momentum building for postseason. The game is set for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch at Trustmark Park.
State will conclude their week with a three-game series against Texas A&M starting Thursday night on ESPNU.
As we have in all of the big three sports this season, we're bringing a statistical look at where Mississippi State is in baseball this season. This post will go up weekly at Bulldog Blitz and gives a full breakdown of individual and team rankings as the Bulldogs compare to the rest of the SEC and, in some cases, the rest of the country.
