Safety Daymon David weighing options in the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, & SEC
Defensive back Daymon David carries an impressive offer sheet and the Reisterstown (Md.) Franklin star is getting closer to ending his recruitment. There are currently five teams that are doing a really good job recruiting David but the door is not completely shut on the other teams that have been pursuing him.
IN HIS OWN WORDS...
Boston College: "Coach Aazaar and coach Hafley can really make it work for me," David said. "I feel as thought coach Hafley can develop me into one of the greatest DBs ever. I haven't really followed the program but I always liked
Luke Kuechly. I didn't get to visit up there yet but I have done a virtual visit. The whole campus is like a castle and it's really nice."
Indiana: "Coach Jones at Indiana and I have developed a close relationship over this recruiting process," he said. "I really like coach Allen and a bunch of guys on that coaching staff.
Tiawan Mullen and I talk all the time. He tells me how I could come there and be like him. He's one of the best in the Big Ten. I've seen how they've developed him. I took a virtual visit earlier this year and it was really well. The campus is really big."
Michigan: "Michigan has a good tradition of putting out DBs and first rounders," said David. "It's also a really good academic school. That plays a big role for me. They play a lot of man coverage so they need safeties that can cover and I started out as a cornerback so I can cover really well. When I talk to the coaches we talk about their schemes, their practices, how they could use me, and how I could be a big time player there."
Mississippi State: "I like that Mississippi State is in the SEC," he said. "They're going to play all those big teams every year. I could go there and show my talent, show that I can cover, and they really need guys to come in and make it happen. Coach Tre Bell and I have developed a great relationship. Coach Jason Washington and I have had a great relationship ever since we first got on the phone. I talked to the defensive coordinator and we bonded a little. I'm hoping to set up a virtual visit there soon."
Oklahoma: "Coach Grinch and what he brings out at Oklahoma is great," David said. "I watch Bookie (Brendan Radley-Hiles) a lot and see how he plays in that defense. Coach Will Johnson and coach Lincoln Riley are great.Caleb (Williams)and I actually played against each other since we were in 7th grade and now he wants to team up to beat everybody. He'd be the quarterback on offense and I'd be the quarterback on defense. That virtual visit was amazing. Everything was crazy. The facilities, practice fields, and everything was great."
On his next steps: "I can tackle very well and I can cover very well so they could put me on a tight end or a slot," he said. "I'm also very rangy so I can get sideline to sideline easily. I really feel like I can fit in a lot of schemes. The plan is to keep working hard and then when I feel it, I'll commit."
RIVALS' REACTIONS...
David was primed for an impressive spring evaluation period, but the pandemic really sabotaged the momentum he was building. At a recent workout he impressed with his physical makeup and his long speed. As a safety prospect he showed great range and the length that he brings to the table as a 6-foot-2 prospect should really help at the next level. David's footwork is pretty good for this stage of his development but that will surely get refined by college coaches. Having a solid strength and conditioning program at the next level will really benefit David because there's very little mass on his frame at this point. It should help him become more explosive and help him deliver even more punishing hits than he already does. Michigan, Oklahoma and Boston College seem to be in locked in a tight battle for his commitment but there's still time for each team to pick up some momentum.
