The 6-4, 190-pound right-hander was a three-year letter-winner as a pitcher and first baseman for coach Buster Kelso at Christian Brothers High School, earning all-state, all-region and all-metro honors as both a junior and senior. He sat out the 2003 baseball season as a redshirt at Georgia Tech and will be eligible as a freshman for the 2004 season at Mississippi State.
"We are very pleased that this outstanding right-handed pitcher has signed with Mississippi State," said MSU head coach Ron Polk. "He had a tremendous high school career pitching for Christian Brothers High School and is transferring from Georgia Tech to become a part of our school and baseball program. We are confident that Jon will be a tremendous asset to our university both on and off the baseball field."
Crosby compiled a 7-0 record with a remarkable 0.78 earned run average as a senior, helping lead the Purple Wave to a 32-9 record. He paced the CBHS pitching staff with 64 strikeouts in 45 innings. He also hit a career-best .357 and led his team with five home runs. A finalist for "Best of the Preps" honors, Crosby was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 45th round of Major League Baseball's June draft in 2002.
He notched an 8-4 record with a 1.62 earned run average as a junior in 2001 and for the second consecutive year was the winning pitcher in the state championship game. Crosby was named MVP of the 2001 USA Classic held in Millington, Tenn., and later earned all-tournament team honors at the 2001 National Classic in Anaheim, Calif. Last summer he competed for Dulin's Dodgers, helping lead the Memphis based summer league team to the 2002 AAU National Championship in Ft. Myers, Fla.
"Mississippi State University has one of the nation's most highly-regarded baseball programs and I am fortunate to now be a part of it," said Crosby. "I would like to contribute, in any way, to the team's success."
Crosby earned placement on the "B" honor roll for four consecutive years at Christian Brothers High School. He is the son of Gus and Teresa Crosby of Germantown, Tenn.
