Mississippi State QB Keytaon Thompson makes Rivals100 jump

New Orleans (Miss.) Landry Walker dual-threat quarterback Keytaon Thompson made a jump into the Rivals250 during his high school season.

Now, Thompson, who is already enrolled at MSU, has jumped into the Rivals100. He was the No. 186 player in the country, but now he's the No. 85 overall recruit.

"Thompson doesn't get the hype of some SEC quarterback signees but has the talent to be a future star," Rivals.com's Woody Wommack said. "He's a tall, lean prospect who can make plays with both his arm and his legs and has the 'it' factor you look for in quarterback."

Thompson was named the Gatorade High School Player of the Year in the state of Louisiana for the 2016-17 season.

Thompson completed 182-of-304 passes for 3,521 yards and 40 touchdowns against just five interceptions through 14 games. He had also rushed for 1,264 yards and 24 scores. The District 8-5A Most Valuable Player, he entered the state final with 10,280 yards of total offense and 144 touchdowns in his prep football career.

He led Landry-Walker to a 13-2 season with a 5A state title win over West Monroe, 50-21.

Mississippi State linebacker target Willie Gay also jumped into the Rivals100. He was previously a four-star recruit ranked outside the Rivals250, but now he's rated as the No. 73 player in the country.

“Gay was one of the most impressive players at this year's Mississippi All-Star Classic," Rivals.com's Rob Cassidy said. "He's added significant muscle this year and has retained the same athleticism that has always made him a special prospect. Once committed to Ole Miss, Gay will likely land at either Michigan or Mississippi State.”

Mississippi State had a big recruiting weekend that hosted several uncommitted official visitors. Two of those recruits, defensive tackle Tae-kion Reed and punter Tucker Day, committed to the Bulldogs.

MSU has 22 total commitments and has the No. 24 class in the country according to Rivals.com.
