Mississippi State added another linebacker to the commitment list Tuesday night when Gilbertown (AL) Southern Choctaw's Terrell Johnson placed his name on the list during an in-home visit. Johnson talks about the reasons he made his pledge.
"It was because they were the ones that paid the most attention to me," he stated. "Out of everybody, they showed the most interest. Even though everybody offered me full rides, they really paid the most attention to me. Plus I got a good relationship with coach Jones, so that helped out too."
Coach Amos Jones visited Tuesday night and came away with Johnson's commitment. Currently he doesn't have any other in-homes planned but did set up an official visit during the meeting.
"That was my first and last one," he said. "Well, coach Croom supposed to come se me too. January 19th I am supposed to be going to Mississippi State, me and my folks, my mom and my dad, are supposed to be going up there for the weekend."
Any other visits?
"I doubt it," he said. "I highly doubt it." He also visited MSU unofficially for the Auburn and Arkansas games and liked what he saw.
"I liked their defense," he said. "Their defense is for real." He will be playing Sam linebacker at State and plans to play immediately.
"They said most definitely I am going to play as a freshman, so I'm looking forward to that," he said.
While football was a selling point, academics also helped out the Bulldogs.
"Of course my GPA is a 3.3, 3.4, somewhere in there and I have a 22 on the ACT, but I am taking that again," he said. "I am going to shoot higher.
"I plan to major in chemical engineering. As a matter of fact, our school guidance counselor, she went to State, and I sat down numerous times and talked about it and she said that was a good place to go if you want to go into that field. That's just all the better."
So who did it come down to?
"I had offers from Memphis, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Alabama State," he said. "I believe that was it."
