Evans commits to MSU

McComb (Miss.) junior Deonte Evans took an unofficial visit to Mississippi State on Saturday and his trip couldn't have gone any better. The safety/athlete prospect received an offer from the Bulldogs and needed less than an hour to commit to the Bulldogs.

Evans becomes the second commitment for MSU head coach Dan Mullen concerning the Class of 2012, joining Madison Central (Miss.) offensive lineman Devon Desper.

"I was very excited," said Evans. "There are really no words to describe it and I am very excited. I got the offer today and then went and talked to Coach (Dan) Mullen and told him I wanted to commit. He got real excited and explained the importance of sticking with my word and I told him I was. I am very certain I want to be a Bulldog and I wanted to get it out of the way once I got the offer from Mississippi State. I am just focused on Mississippi State."

Evans also had offers from Arkansas State and Louisiana Tech and was also drawing interest from Ole Miss and LSU.

During his visit Saturday, Evans got the chance to watch the Bulldogs scrimmage at Davis Wade Stadium. And the intensity from the MSU coaches stood out to him.

"The way they practice, you can tell the coaches here are very committed to Mississippi State," said the 6-foot and 185-pound Evans. "They have very aggressive coaches and trust me, my high school coaches are also that intense and I love playing for coaches like that."

Evans previously attended MSU's first junior day event and said he's been in constant contact with the Bulldogs. And having that relationship with his recruiting coach from MSU, Chris Wilson, helped him make his decision today.

"I've had a good relationship with Coach (Chris) Wilson," said Evans. "We talk every week and we've been building that bond for a long time now. So being able to hear him say they were offering me today was just great."

Last year as a junior, Evans excelled on both sides of the football. He rushed for 768 yards and 12 touchdowns and also had 278 receiving yards and five more scores. Defensively, he had 46 tackles with three interceptions and three sacks.

As far as the next level is concerned, Evans is unsure of his position but said that was not a problem.

"I played safety and started there since the ninth grade," said Evans. "But I also play some running back and other positions. Mississippi State isn't sure where I will play for them but I am fine with wherever I play. I trust the coaches will put me in the best position."

With his collegiate decision in the past, Evans said his mind is at ease now.

"It is good because now I can just focus on my school work and having a great senior year and leading our team to a great season," said Evans. "So it's a lot of pressure lifted off of me. It is great to get that offer I was wanting and then commit in the same day. It was just a great day and I can't stop smiling."
