Busy summer for Brown

It's been a busy summer for Beniquez Brown.

The three-star athlete has camped at several of the Southeastern Conference's elite programs and currently has three top contenders.

This summer Brown has made trips to Camped at Mississippi State, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida.

"Recruiting has been going good," Brown said. "It's a lot of running around, going on visits, trying to get a feel for the coaches if I decide to go to these schools. Basically I'm just trying to get a feel for them."

The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder from Florence, Ala., has offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Vanderbilt but three of those schools are at the top.

"Mississippi State, Alabama and Florida, that's my top three," Brown said. "I'm trying to cut if off and make a decision before my season starts. If I don't I'll decide by signing day or when one of the schools break away from the rest."

Brown plays a variety of positions in high school and could continue to excel at any number of them at the next level. Among his top three, Brown stated that none of them have recruited him for a specific position.

"None of them have really said," Brown said. "I'm a versatile athlete so I can get out there and play a lot of things. It's up to me. Whenever I get there it's wherever I fit best at the school that I pick. Whichever position gets me on the field faster then that's what I'll play."

Brown recently attended camp at Mississippi State for the second time this summer. He returned to Starkville for Big Dawg Camp under the lights at Davis Wade Stadium and as one of the top performers in the secondary.

"My first thing was I'm about to go against some of the top players in the nation," Brown said. "Basically it was guys like myself so I had to show up and play and show I could compete with anybody. I got out there and felt like I was covering the top receivers and doing what I do best which is play football. I felt like I did good against the competition. We went through the drills and gave us a feel of if we were Bulldogs this is how it's going to be. It was good."

Also at Big Dawg Camp Brown's teammate safety Kivon Coman picked up an offer from MSU.

"We've always talked about playing together," Brown said. "He got that offer and made it real good for us to have the opportunity to play together. We workout together. My other cousin on our team (2013 cornerback Jamaris Hart), Mississippi State is looking at him too. If they keep recruiting him hard and Kivon and I decide to go then we'll all be there together. That would be even better."

Over the past two years, Brown has combined to rush for 2,158 yards and 32 touchdowns while collecting 214 tackles on defense.

Last season, Brown rushed for 1,129 yards and 15 touchdowns as well as racking up 134 tackles and two interceptions. The Falcons finished with a 4-6 record but with most of their starters returning Brown is hoping for a reversal of fortune and began their quest for a state title on Monday.

"I think we're going to be pretty good," Brown said. "We've worked hard this summer. We lost two people on offense and two people on defense so we feel like we're strong enough to compete for a state championship. We had a young offensive line last year and this year they are all coming back and giving me a lot of run to run behind. We're going to be pretty good and I think we'll be able to win the state championship."

Brown is rated the No. 14 prospect in Alabama and the nation's 35th ranked athlete.
