Another look at MSUs latest commitment

Lexington, Tenn., is not a place that a lot of Bulldogs are familiar with, but it is a name they will be hearing a lot of in years to come. State received a commitment from Ty Evans -- a quarterback from that area – last week, and he will bring a different style of play to the team. Lexington coach Steve Lindsey talks about his star player, and lets the Bulldog fans know what they are getting.

“I think they are going to get a mighty fine talent,” commented Lindsey, the head man at Lexington High. “He is a student of the game and he works extremely hard in the weight room.

“He is a physical quarterback. He is a very strong quarterback. He is going to bring leadership and he is going to bring a lot of things to the table for that bunch. He is great kid and makes good grades (3.2 GPA, 20 on the ACT) and he is a total commitment.”

While State currently uses several quarterbacks that are at or below six feet tall, Evans will bring in a 6-foot-2.5, 202-pound frame that is possibly more suited to the type of offense that Coach Croom hopes to eventually run in its entirety. Rather than the dual-type player, he appears to be going in the purely pro-style direction for the future.

“One thing is that he has a great ability to read a defense,” Lindsey commented. “He can get you from a bad play into a good play. He has a strong arm and he has a very accurate arm. One of his best attributes is that he is a strong kid.”

While strength and accuracy are his strong points, his speed – a 5.19-second 40-yard dash time -- is not his forte, but is something that he is able to work around. As a pocket passer, lateral movement is more important, and his 4.72 shuttle time is more than adequate to make him effective.

“He has good feet,” Lindsey explained. “He is not the kind of kid you are going to try to run the option with, but he has good feet. He runs well. His first 20 yards is his best. His forty time is not real great, because he doesn’t have a long stride, but he has good feet.”

All in all, Lindsey feels like the Bulldogs got a steal in Evans, but also credits the staff for their hard work.

“They got a good kid,” he said. “They have added to their program by getting this kid. I am glad to see him get an opportunity to go down there. Coach [Sylvester]Croom and Coach [Shane] Beamer, those guys have done an excellent job of recruiting him. I appreciate their interest and I appreciate them giving this boy an opportunity.”
