COLUMBIA, Mo. ? Day two of the 2013 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships saw a variety of action from the Mississippi State track and field team, as sophomore Erica Bougard finished second in the heptathlon and two hurdlers advanced to Sunday's finals.

Coming into the remainder of the competition with 3,555 points, Bougard claimed the runner-up title in the heptathlon on Friday at Audrey J. Walton Stadium with 5,786 points, a new personal best and MSU record.  The Lady Bulldog posted a top performance in the long jump at 19-08.75, the best of the afternoon for the lady leapers.

Collecting 853 points with her jump, Bougard then threw for a personal-best 106-09 in the javelin. To seal her spot in second, the Byhalia, Miss., native then clocked a 2:17.82 in the 800-meter run, finishing fourth in the event.

"I was a bit under the weather, so running the 800 in the cold wasn't the best feeling, but I went out there and pushed through it," Bougard said. "A second-place finish is great."

Sophomore Ocian Archer also excelled for the Lady Bulldogs, posting a personal-best 1:00.24 in the 400-meter hurdles. Her speed placed her first in her heat, fifth overall, and allowed her to automatically qualify for Sunday's finals.

On the men's side, Scottie Hearns, who entered the meet ranked No. 18 nationally in the 400-meter hurdles, posted the top time of 51.02. His speed will automatically advance him to Sunday's finals and now rank him No. 13 in the NCAA.

Later in the evening, young Bulldog Brandon McBride posted a 1:50.17 in the 800-meter run. His time placed him in ninth, and he just missed the event finals as only the top eight advance.

"Our athletes continued their hard work on day two," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "They competed with a great effort, and I am looking forward to seeing where we will go if we keep this momentum going."

Competition will continue tomorrow starting at 1:00 p.m. with the men's javelin throw. Still to come on Saturday, the Maroon and White will see action in the men's javelin, long jump, 1500-meter run, 110-meter hurdles, 400-meter dash and 3000-meter steeplechase. The MSU women will compete tomorrow in the discus throw, pole vault, 1500-meter run, long jump, high jump, 400-meter dash and 3000-meter steeplechase.
