After diligently serving the Mississippi State community during her four-year career as a member of the Bulldog softball team, senior outfielder Jessica Cooley was named to the 2013 Southeastern Conference Community Service Team, the league announced Monday.
"I am extremely honored to be named to this team," Cooley said. "I love the Starkville community, and it is always fun to get out there with my teammates and meet new people. I have been so privileged to spend four years of my life in the Starkville community and have loved helping out and meeting all the kids and families."
In Starkville, Cooley has donated Christmas gifts and hosted Christmas parties for underprivileged youth at East Oktibbeha County Elementary School. This past August, she helped build a home along with other student-athletes in conjunction with Starkville Habitat for Humanity. Each semester, the right-handed slugger participates in many Bully Blitz and Champion Breakfast campaigns at local elementary schools, promoting reading and education.
Away from Mississippi's College Town, the Birmingham, Ala., native is also heavily involved in service efforts. Cooley cut off over half her hair and donated it Locks of Love after a friend passed away due to breast cancer. In Tuscaloosa, Ala., Cooley teamed up with the Tuscaloosa Area Volunteer Reception Center to clean up tornado debris. The senior has also spent several weekends volunteering her time at various youth softball clinics around the state of Mississippi, while also teaming up with rival Ole Miss to donate toys to the Le Bonhuer Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
"Our coaches do a great job of getting us involved with our community," Cooley said.
