Bergeron gaining attention

You just never know where a player is going to be when they start to draw coaches attention. It might be a Friday night home game, a game where the coach is scouting another player, a camp where his performance is very good.

Or in the case of Mandeville (La.) High school quarterback Matt Bergeron, it might be during the summer 7-on-7 tour. The 6-foot, 170-pound signal caller started to see his recruitment pick up after his performance in the national tournament and he is hoping it leads to an offer from a certain SEC school.

While participating with his team in the National 7-on-7 Tournament in Hoover, Ala., Bergeron caught the attention of a new team. SEC media days were going on that week and one of the coaches that came out and watched was Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen.

"My recruitment really picked after that 7-on-7 tourney in Hoover," Bergeron said. "I was named MVP of the whole tournament. I started hearing from Arkansas State and Louisiana Tech after that. I also got word that Dan Mullen was very interested in me. I called him and talked to him. He told me to send him some game film after our first game and we would go from there. He said he would love to have me. I would love to play for Mississippi State. I grew up in Baton Rouge and could see Tiger Stadium out of my back window. I would love to play in the SEC. It would be a dream come true and make my life complete."

Bergeron is a leader for the Skippers on and off the field. He works very hard to be the player that others can lean on and go to for advice. While he doesn't shy away from the attention, he is also very humble about it as well.

"My main focus is being a leader," Bergeron said. "I try to encourage my teammates instead of yelling and screaming at them. I spend a ton of hours in the film room watching tape to get better. I was kind of labeled a pocket passer so I wanted to be able to improve my running skills. I have been working very hard with former Mississippi State running back Christian Ducre. He has helped me with my speed and my elusiveness. I try to do my very best to always learn as much as I can and to listen as best I can."
