In the month of June, Madison Central (Miss.) High School's Maurice Bennett attended a pair of camps on campuses of BCS schools. And his showing at those camps has maintained interest on both sides for the 2012 defensive lineman prospect.
"It's going real well with camps this summer," said the 6-foot-2 and 282-pound Bennett. "I have been to Mississippi State and then I went to Miami last weekend. It went real well down at Miami and I enjoyed myself there. Their coaches said they would keep an eye on me and told me I did real well.
"I have an offer from Washingtn State but now Miami and Mississippi State are showing interest. So that's a good thing."
And Bennett said he also heard encouraging words about his performance at MSU's camp earlier this month.
"It went pretty good at Mississippi State," said Bennett, who had 37 tackles last year, including six tackles for loss and two sacks. "Coach Geoff Collins said I did a good job and that he would put in a good word for me with coach Dan Mullen. They told me to keep working hard and to make sure I am doing everything right this summer. They said if I do that then in due time they may offer me."
Starting today, Bennett will head into a different region of the country and could make a few stops along the way.
"I am going to Syracuse (today) and that should be a fun trip," said Bennett. "And I may stop and see some other colleges on the way up there but I am not sure yet."
During his summer camp visits and future stops, Bennett said he is steadily picking up new techniques that will aid him for his senior year this fall.
"I played at defensive end and defensive tackle last year but this year I should mainly just be at defensive tackle," noted Bennett. "So I am learning as much as I can this summer and working hard to improve my quickness and strength. You have to work even harder in the offseason and be ready because the season will be here pretty soon."
