Kicker Logan Cooke and Columbia Academy(1-1) lost to Sylva Bay 24-20. Cooke handled all kicking duties for the Cougars as well as playing tight end on offense where he made four catches for 36 yards and two touchdowns. He had five kicks that all went for touchbacks, punted three times with two inside the 20 and hit two of his three extra points. Season Stats: Seven punts for 41 yards-per-punt, 3-4 XPs, 0-1 field goals and five catches for 63 yards and two TDs.
Newton County(2-0) Wide Receiver Jamoral Graham had five touches last week for over 100 yards and touched it only three times on Friday night but had another 100 yards as his team routed Southeast Lauderdale, 52-21. Graham rushed twice for 92 yards and a touchdown and caught one pass for 16 yards. Season Stats: Five carries for 167 yards and two TDs, three catches for 51 yards and a touchdown for a total of 218 yards on eight touches with three touchdowns.
Four-star linebacker Gerri Green and Greenville-Weston (1-1) dropped a game to Clarksdale 26-24 Friday night and Green played on both sides of the ball. There were no stats reported via at the time of this post. Last week, Green recorded 18 tackles with seven of those solos, two TFL and a forced fumble and fumble recovered.
The offensive line duo of Jordan Harris and Tyler Jones of Stephenson(Ga.) faced Norland (Miami Fla.) Saturday night.
Defensive end Darius Liggins and the Chargers from Oxford (2-0) got a big win in the "Little Egg Bowl" as they defeated Starkville, 35-24. The Chargers came back from a 10-point deficit at halftime to win the game in the end. Liggins had solid work with 12 tackles in the game. Season stats: 17 tackles with one for loss from his defensive end position.
Defensive back Chris Rayford of Byhalia (1-1) ran into a buzz saw Friday as the high-powering offense of North Panola knocked them off, 42-7. Rayford had an injury that affected his game in the first quarter but played both ways the rest of the game. He had three tackles defensively and just two carries for eight yards. Season stats: Rayford has rushed nine times for 146 yards and hit the endzone three times and totaled eight tackles. He is expected to play defense at MSU.
Quarterback Elijah Staley was off this week. Last week, he was able to spend more time on the sidelines than on the field as Wheeler (Ga.) (1-0) rolled Sprayberry 44-14. Staley was in the game most of the first half throwing three touchdowns on 5-of-6 passing with 160 yards.
The Red Rebels from Harrison Central (2-0) and MSU defensive back commit Lashard Durr got win number two on the season with a 39-0 drubbing of West Harrison. His stats were not recorded at the time of this release. Last week, Durr put up 120 yards of total offense and scored on an 80-yard touchdown reception. Defensively he had two tackles and a pass breakup.
Quarterback Nick Fitzgerald and Richmond Hill (Ga.) (1-0) won their opening game of the season against Johnson, 29-7. Fitzgerald threw only three passes as he did most of his work with his feet rushing 15 times for 105 yards and two touchdowns.
Columbia (Ga.) High School (1-0) and linebacker Deshon Cooper started things off with a 52-7 win against Cedar Grove. Cooper did not play.
Forrest County (0-1) and running back Dontavian Lee began their season against 2A's top team, Bassfield. The Yellow Jackets of Bassfield proved too much for one of 4A's top teams and Forrest County dropped the game 42-29. Lee had 13 carries for 45 yards and two catches for 40 yards and a touchdown.
Aeris Williams and the West Point Green Wave (0-1) started their season off with a hard-fought loss against the defending 6A Champs of South Panola. However, Williams made his impression and showed everyone that he is the best running back in the state. The future Bulldog racked up 279 all-purpose yards on 41 touches. He had 32 carries for 194 yards and four touchdowns, five catches for 34 yards and four kick returns for 51 yards.
JUCO linemen Jocquell Johnson and Co-Lin Community College started off the season with a win over Northeast, 29-20.
Norman Price of Hinds began their season on the right foot defeating Delta, 49-7.
2015 Class
2013 signee Donald Gray at Co-Lin is redshirting during the 2013 season due to injury.
2016 Class
Sophomore linebacker Jonathan Pollock of Dr. Phillips High School (1-0) in Orlando got off to a great start over Timber Creek, 35-0. The sophomore linebacker dominated with 11 tackles and three for a loss.
