Moultrie drafted 27th overall
Arnett Moultrie became the first Mississippi State player since 2010 to be selected in the NBA Draft when the Miami Heat took him with the 27th overall pick.Thursday night,
Moments later, however, the NBA champions traded the Memphis native to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Moultrie became the first Bulldog player to be taken in the first round since 1996 when Erick Dampier (Indiana) and Dontae' Jones (New York) were drafted 10th and 21st, respectively.
The last MSU player drafted was Jarvis Varnado in the second round (41st), also by the Miami Heat in 2010.
In all, 24 former MSU players have now been drafted, with the first being Herb Hargett in 1951 by the Ft. Wayne Pistons with the fourth overall pick.
Moultrie, who played just one year at MSU after transferring from UTEP, is the 9th Bulldog to be selected in the first round. The highest MSU player taken was hall of famer Bailey Howell at No. 2 by Detroit in 1959.
An All-SEC performer this past year in leading the Bulldogs to a 21-12 ledger, Moultrie averaged 16.4 points a game and led the SEC with 10.5 rebounds while finishing second with 18 double-doubles.
