Shurna making mark for U.S.

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern rising sophomore John Shurna (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) made four of five field goal attempts and scored nine points in a starting role as the United States held off Lithuania 76-69 Wednesday to remain undefeated at the FIBA U19 World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand.

The victory improves the U.S. to a perfect 6-0 at the Championships as it is set to face Canada (3-3) in the quarterfinal round Thursday.

Shurna is averaging 6.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest through the team's first six games. He has started two games, is averaging 13.5 minutes of action and has connected on 14 of 27 field goal attempts (.519).

Shurna's best overall performance came in the United States' first game against Iran as he notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. He recorded a personal tournament best of 13 points in the team's victory over Egypt.

All quarterfinal and semifinal games, as well as the bronze and gold medal games are being video streamed at FIBAtv.com for a small fee.
