Eagles scrimmage at Ocean Springs High
OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. - A crowd of 1,500 at Ocean Springs High's Hugh Pepper Field saw the Southern Miss football team go through a 115-play scrimmage Wednesday afternoon on a chilly spring day. The practice served as the 11th of 15 scheduled workouts for the Golden Eagles this spring.
"It looked like offensively we got after it today," said Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora. "The defense stopped some drives but they moved around slow and I was disappointed at the way they came out today."
Rising sophomore Austin Davis threw for 248 yards on 21-of-29 attempts with three touchdowns. His scoring strikes were to Gerald Baptiste for 60 yards, Leroy Banks for 18 and Quentin Pierce for eight. Pierce led the way for the receivers with seven catches for 60 yards, while Baptiste tallied four catches for 100 yards and Banks notched two receptions for 30 yards.
V.J. Floyd, who finished the scrimmage with 25 rushes for 124 yards, got a pair of touchdowns on the ground. His first score came on a 4th-and-1 play at the goal line and he added a seven-yard score late.
As for the defense, junior transfer Hendrick Leverette tallied a sack and two passes broken up for the defense.
Justin Wilson and Kendrick Presley added interceptions for the defense, while Willie Packer and Joel Ross each added sacks as well and Eddie Hicks notched a fumble return.
In the special teams, Daniel Hrapmann collected 4-of-4 field goal attempts including a 43-yarder and Justin Estes made a pair as well including a 28-yarder.
Fedora also announced that the team will not practice on Friday because of Good Friday, and that the team will make it up the following Friday, April 17, before the spring game. Southern Miss returns to the practice field on Monday. The Spring Game is set for 6 p.m., April 18, at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth. Please note that tickets will be $15 for adults the day of the contest.
