Crabtree cleared of wrongdoing by NCAA

The NCAA on Thursday cleared Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree of any wrongdoing emanating from a promotional Web site, meaning Crabtree can play in Saturday's opener against Eastern Washington.

Robert Baker, Tech's faculty athletics representative, issued a statement Thursday saying, "The university became aware of a possible compliance issue involving a football student-athlete. We have looked into the matter and communicated with Big 12 and NCAA officials and found that there were no violations."

A company was planning a Web site to promote Crabtree. But when Crabtree talked to Tech officials, he was told the Web site would be a violation of NCAA rules.

However, the site inadvertently went live. After it was taken down, Tech officials received an apology from the company but still self-reported the violation, which technically meant Crabtree was ineligible.
