Tide resumes drills
The Alabama football team went through its seventh of 15 spring practices Monday at the Thomas-Drew practice fields, two days after the Crimson Tide defense held the upper hand in UA's first spring scrimmage.
Position groupings looked much the same as they did on Saturday, although linebacker Cory Reamer worked at the weakside for the first time this spring.
Reamer, a junior-to-be, was a weakside reserve last season but opened the spring at strongside. On Monday, he was back at weakside working with the second group behind Jimmy Johns. The first group of linebackers remained unchanged, including 'Jack' linebacker Brandon Fanney, who worked at defensive end early in the spring.
Other notables from Monday:
*** The Tide showed some mixed drills during the individual periods, with the offensive tackles pairing off with tight ends under the instruction of new tight ends coach Bobby Williams. The inside linebackers and the secondary also worked together.
*** On the offensive line, Drew Davis again worked with the first group at right tackle. He and Taylor Pharr have shared time with the first group this spring, although Saban noted Saturday that Davis started in the scrimmage. ... When the interior offensive linemen worked alone, the first group consisted of Mike Johnson, Antoine Caldwell and Marlon Davis, backed by David Ross, Evan Cardwell and William Vlachos.
*** Cornerback Marquis Johnson worked with the first group in a nickel look, with Javier Arenas working at the 'star', or nickelback position. Justin Woodall continues to work with the first unit at the safety spot opposite Rashad Johnson.
*** The contingent of Tide players in black non-contact jerseys remains unchanged. They include noseguard Brian Motley (finger), safety Travis Sikes (elbow), defensive end Milton Talbert (shoulder), cornerback Lionel Mitchell (back), wide receiver Nikita Stover (hamstring), running back Glen Coffee (shoulder) and offensive lineman Patrick Crump (knee).
*** Incoming signee Jerrell Harris, a linebacker from Gadsden, attended practice and was observing the outside linebackers.
*** The Crimson Tide will resume spring drills Wednesday afternoon. Stay with BamaOnLine.com for photo and video from Monday's practice, coming later today.
