Who to watch in the Shrine Game
With bowl season over and the college all-star games hitting full swing, Rivals.com will be on hand to keep you up to date with all the action.
Practices for the Shrine Game in Houston began today, and our NFL Draft expert – Frank Coyle of www.draftinsiders.com – offers up his list of 10 prospects to keep an eye on this week.
Frank Coyle's 10 to watch at the Shrine Game
RB Anthony Alridge - 5-8, 175 lbs. - Houston
This smallish playmaker has the speed, quickness and running skills to be effective in several roles. He gets to be on the main stage in Houston, and he could find the end zone as a runner, receiver or returner.
RB Allen Patrick - 5-11, 195 lbs. - Oklahoma
This talented natural runner displayed fine skills while backing up Adrian Peterson as an underclassman. He has the burst to get to the second level and has looked impressive against NFL-caliber starters.
WR Jerome Simpson - 6-2, 195 lbs. - Coastal Carolina
This smooth small-college receiver is coming off a huge performance as a senior. He needs to duplicate that production against NFL-level cover men. Simpson has prototypical numbers for the position, but must prove capable against top competition.
DE Kendall Langford - 6-5, 295 lbs. - Hampton
This physical and versatile defender has a huge frame with the athleticism to play both inside and outside in either pro front. He needs a big week against Division-I linemen to rank with the top prospects.
DE Tommy Blake - 6'3" 255 lbs. - TCU
Blake missed most of his senior season with health issues. He is hoping to recover for lost time and prove he is a big-time defender, especially as a pass rusher.
CB Trae Williams - 5-10, 185 lbs. - South Florida
This quick senior cover man has the burst to close on the ball and the recovery speed to match up in the deep game. He could push himself up the rankings with a strong week.
CB Zack Bowman - 6-1, 190 lbs. - Nebraska
Bowman is an athletic senior who returned from a knee injury that cost him his 2006 season. He hopes to improve his grade further with a big week of practice.
FS Jonathan Hefney - 5-9, 185 lbs. - Tennessee
Hefney is a tough, instinctive and versatile defender who will be tested at several secondary spots during the week. He is a sure tackler who has the skills to play any spot in the secondary.
RB Thomas Brown – 5-8 195 lbs. – Georgia
Brown is a smaller – but underrated – running back who lost carries to Knowshon Moreno this season. The Bulldogs have a history of turning out good runners, and Brown may carry on that tradition.
SS Jamie Silva - 5-11, 205 lbs. - Boston College
Silva is a heady prospect who made big plays consistently over his final season. He needs to prove he can match up with tight ends and wide receivers in man-to-man situations.
