Vandy thumps Georgia Tech in Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn.-Vanderbilt got double-figure scoring from four players, jumping on Georgia Tech early and holding a sizable lead most of the afternoon in a 92-79 thumping of the Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium.

VU used an up-tempo approach in attaching Tech's full-court, man-to-man defense, resulting in several easy looks for the Commodores in transition during the first half. The Commodores shot 65 percent for the half-including a seven-of-11 showing from 3-point range-and led 51-31 at the break.

"We liked what we saw in the first half," VU Coach Kevin Stallings said. "Our guards did a good job of getting open. ... We don't mind being pressed."

Shan Foster (17 points), Andrew Ogilvy (16), Alan Metcalfe (15) and Alex Gordon (11) scored in double figures for Vandy.

The final margin was misleading, as the only momentum the 'Jackets got all day came in the final minutes as Stallings emptied the bench. After the Commodores led 87-60 with 3:40 left, Tech went on a 19-5 run to end the game against a VU lineup that included walk-on Joe Duffy, who hit a pair of foul shots for his first career points at home.

"I thought we played really well today, we really did," Stallings said. "I've got to try real hard not to let that last four minutes cloud my memory."

The only thing that kept it from being worse was a mediocre performance at the foul line, where the 'Dores hit just 65 percent (24-37) for the day.

Tech's only lead came when Lewis Clinch hit a jumper for the game's opening points.

The Commodores (7-0) stayed undefeated on the season, as Georgia Tech fell to 3-4.

Vanderbilt will face its second-straight Atlantic Coast Conference opponent (Wake Forest) on Wednesday night at Memorial Gym.
