Big Ten Week 5 Recap
The Illini got their biggest victory in years with a 27-20 upset of visiting Penn State. Illinois had lost 19 in a row to ranked teams, and it's the first time since 1991 that the Illini have started 2-0 in the Big Ten. True freshman WR Arrelious Benn scored twice, on a reception and on a 90-yard kickoff return. The Illini defense intercepted Penn State's Anthony Morelli three times.
Next: Saturday, vs. Wisconsin.
QB Kellen Lewis threw three TD passes as the visiting Hoosiers downed Iowa 38-20. Indiana built a 21-0 second-quarter lead and cruised from there. Lewis, a sophomore, threw for a career-high 322 yards. DE Jammie Kirlew had four of IU's nine sacks.
Next: Saturday, vs. Minnesota.
The Hawkeyes lost their third in a row, falling 38-20 to Indiana. The Hoosiers built a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. QB Jake Christensen threw for 308 yards and three TDs but also was sacked nine times. It was the Hawkeyes' seventh consecutive league loss. Iowa missed two field goals and an extra point.
Next: Saturday, at Penn State.
The Wolverines won their third in a row, beating host Northwestern 28-16. Michigan trailed 16-14 in the fourth quarter before rallying. Chad Henne threw three TD passes, Mike Hart ran for 106 and another score, and Mario Manningham caught 10 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown for the Wolverines.
Next: Saturday, vs. Eastern Michigan.
Michigan State
The Spartans had 564 yards of offense but still lost 37-34 to host Wisconsin. The Badgers had 461 yards of offense themselves. Spartans TB Javon Ringer ran for 145 yards and also had seven receptions for 88 yards. Quarterback Brian Hoyer threw for 323 yards and two scores.
Next: Saturday, vs. Northwestern.
The Golden Gophers' offense was shut down by a tough Ohio State defense in a 30-7 loss to the visiting Buckeyes. Minnesota rushed for just 45 yards on 29 carries, but QB Adam Weber threw for 232 yards and a TD.
Next: Saturday, at Indiana.
The Wildcats lost their third in a row, falling 28-16 to visiting Michigan. Northwestern led 16-14 in the fourth quarter but committed four turnovers in the final period.
Next: Saturday, at Michigan State.
Ohio State
Sophomore TB Chris Wells ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns as the Buckeyes coasted past host Minnesota 30-7. Todd Boeckman added two TD passes for Ohio State, which has allowed opponents to score just 34 points in five games. The Buckeyes finish 11-0 all-time at the Metrodome, as Minnesota is building a new on-campus stadium set to open in 2009.

Penn State
The Nittany Lions lost their second in a row, falling 27-20 to host Illinois. Anthony Morelli threw for 298 yards and a TD but also threw three picks. Penn State started drives in Illinois territory four times in the second half, but converted just one of the possessions into points and that was a field goal. Penn State allowed 216 rushing yards.
Next: Saturday, vs. Iowa.
Curtis Painter threw two TD passes, Kory Sheets ran for 141 yards and Chris Summers kicked four field goals as the host Boilermakers beat Notre Dame 33-19 to improve to 5-0. Purdue led 23-0 at halftime. One negative: The Boilermakers surrendered 426 yards, by far Notre Dame's best output of the season.
Next: Saturday, vs. Ohio State.
P.J. Hill ran for 155 yards and two TDs, and the host Badgers needed every one of them to fend off Michigan State 37-34. The Badgers have won a nation's-best 14 in a row. Wisconsin rolled up 461 yards and had touchdown drives of 85, 91 and 80 yards. Tyler Donovan threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns. The Badgers allowed 564 yards.
