Vanderbilt downs Eastern Michigan, 30-7

Nashville, Tenn.-Vanderbilt forced six turnovers and limited Eastern Michigan to 178 yards of offense, downing the Eagles 30-7 at Dudley Field in front of 37,220 fans on Saturday night.

The Commodores had five interceptions, including one by D.J. Moore that was returned 24 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Vandy had 341 yards of offense and numerous scoring opportunities deep inside EMU territory, but a four-interception game by Chris Nickson denied the offense further scoring opportunities.

The Commodore defense held EMU to just 43 yards and four first downs in the first half, but the Commodores stalled time and time again inside Eagle territory. Bryant Hahnfeldt missed a 36-yard field goal, and Chris Nickson was intercepted at the Eastern 33 and again in the EMU end zone in the half.

However, VU didn't completely squander its 230 yards of first-half offense. Nickson found Earl Bennett on a 47-yard strike in the first quarter, and Hahnfeldt connected on field goals of 22 and 46.

The Commodores opened the second half with Darlron Spead's interception on the first play, then extended their lead to 20-0 when Nickson found Sean Walker with a 17-yard scoring strike.

EMU answered with its only score-a 14-yard touchdown pass from Andy Schmitt to Travis Lewis-but Moore answered with an interception return on EMU's next possession after a VU three-and-out.

Hahnfeldt added a 27-yard fourth-quarter field goal for the final margin.

Vanderbilt (3-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) travels to Auburn for its next game on Saturday.
