Spain Park DE shows off at Combine

William Green didn't have to participate. He didn't have to be there.

Unlike the majority of 300-plus in attendance at the inaugural Parkside Combine at Spain Park High on Sunday, Green has the attention of college coaches.

He has an Auburn offer. Bama, too. Throw in Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech and most recently Tennessee. Now throw in a dozen more.

Green didn't need the attention. He didn't ask for it. But he got it.

After measuring in at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, Green put up the best overall numbers of the day for prospects 200 pounds or more.

He ran a 4.68 40-yard dash. He had a 4.34-second shuttle, did 13 reps of 185 pounds on the bench press, added a 4.7-second three-cone, and a 33.5-inch vertical leap.

And yet, he still wasn't satisfied.

"I think it went pretty well," said Green. "I think I could have done a little bit better in the 40. Most of my times are less than that, but overall, it went pretty well.

"I got to see where I stand toe-to-toe with some of these other guys."

And he has to like what he saw.

Best in Combine

While Green was the top performer of the big guys, it was a little-known prospect that took home the overall "Best in Combine".

Harvest (Ala.) Sparkman ATH Jonathon Richardson finished with the best numbers of all the participants.

The 5-foot-8, 183-pounder ran a 4.56 40-yard dash, did 18 reps of 185 pounds on the bench press, had a 4.33-second three-cone, a combine best, a 4.31-second shuttle, and a 41-inch vertical leap, which was also best of the day.

"I feel great," said Richardson. "I'm a little surprised, but it's a good feeling."

Other top senior performers included Moundville-Hale County ATH Antonio Johnson, Tuscumbia-Deshler's Dominique King, Andalusia LB Michael Berry, Tuscaloosa-Central ATH Demario Pippen and Marsellos Wilder, Montgomery-Jeff Davis DE DeMarcus DuBose and RB Ronnie Johnson, Pleasant Grove TE Kendric Murray, and Tarrant LB Javaris Fritz.

Top Underclassmen

Seniors weren't the only ones participating Sunday. Several juniors, sophomores, and even a handful of freshmen were in attendance.

One of the more impressive looking juniors was Andalusia (Ala.) LB Nico Johnson. The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder ran a 4.7 40-yard dash, had a 4.83-second three-cone, a 4.94-second shuttle and a 31.5-inch vertical leap.

"I did okay, but I think I could've done better," said Johnson.

Another top in-state junior was Spain Park DL Darrius McMullin. The 6-foot-2, 262-pounder ran a 5.0 40-yard dash, did 21 reps on the bench, had a 5.33-second three-cone, a 5.16-second shuttle and a 27-inch vertical leap.

Other impressive underclassmen included Maplesville-Isabella ATH Norman Craig, Tuscumbia-Deshler QB Chase Blackburn and Jose Mills, among many others.
