Lewis has big day in Saturday scrimmage
Thaddeus Lewis completed 22 of 28 passes for 275 yards and four touchdowns in Duke's 85 play controlled scrimmage Saturday, providing further notice that he has matured greatly as a quarterback since a roller coaster freshman season.Sophomore quarterback
Lewis was sharp all morning, hitting passes in the flat, over the middle, and deep down the sidelines as the offense continued its solid output this spring.
Eron Riley caught four passes from Lewis and led the receivers with 80 yards and one touchdown.
Tielor Robinson also caught four passes for 37 yards, while Raphael Chestnut totaled 52 yards on only three catches.
Riley and Chestnut made the two biggest highlight reel plays of the day with a pair of fantastic catches.
Riley hauled in a 20-yard pass on 3rd-and-15 after deflecting the ball up into the air and winning a jump ball with cornerback Rodney Ezzard.
Chestnut also sustained a drive by reeling in a pass over the middle and holding onto the ball despite being hammered by safety Adrian Aye-Darko.
Though the passing game shined, the Duke defense also had its moments.
Greg Akinbiyi, Vincent Rey, Abraham Kromah, Pontus Bondeson, and Marvin Marcelin all tallied sacks, and Catron Gainey secured the defense's only takeaway of the day by recovering a fumble.
The defense also did a fine job slowing down the offense's ground attack.
Clifford Harris and Tielor Robinson combined for just 66 yards rushing on 32 carries. Harris did plunge into the end zone on a one yard scoring strike.
Duke has one week left of spring drills and will close practice next Saturday with the annual spring game at Wallace Wade Stadium.
