Coffee undergoes surgery

For the second time in as many years, an Alabama running back has undergone surgery for a sports hernia. According to a statement released by the University's media relations department, Glen Coffee, a rising sophomore who played in every game as a true freshman last season, underwent successful surgery in Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Coffee's surgery was performed by Dr. William C. Meyers, the same surgeon who operated on Tide running back Kenneth Darby on March 2, 2005.

"The surgery went well," Dr. Meyers said, "and there were no complications. His prognosis is excellent."

Coffee rushed for 179 yards on 48 carries and had eight receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown last fall.

Coffee began to feel the affects of the hernia late in the 2005 season. He saw only limited action in the Tide's 13-10 Cotton Bowl win over Texas Tech. The Ft. Walton Beach, Fla. native sat out all of spring drills.

Beyond Darby and Coffee, the Tide returns one other halfback with game experience, sophomore Jimmy Johns. Redshirt freshman Roy Upchurch turned in a strong performance during spring drills and another redshirt freshman, Ali Sharrief, will also be available when fall camp gets underway at UA in August. The Tide will also welcome incoming freshman Terry Grant this summer.
