Dawgs practice in the rain

Georgia returned to the practice fields on Monday and battled a few brief rain showers for a two-hour workout in helmets and shorts.

Head coach Mark Richt said the team's second day of spring practice was better than the first on Saturday morning.

"It was a lot better today," said Richt. "I had a suspicion on day one that we had a little loafing going on, but today everyone ran around like Georgia football players. There were still some mistakes but we're putting a lot of things in right now."

According to Richt, the Bulldog receiving corps is in a battle to earn playing time next fall. Senior Bryan McClendon and junior Sean Bailey are currently listed as starters at split end and flanker, respectively.

"I'm looking for a couple of receivers to step up right now. That position is as wide open as you can get, so how physical they play with the pads on will go along way to answering that," Richt said.

Richt handed out complements for some players following practice and mentioned good work by quarterback D.J. Shockley and tight end Leonard Pope before moving on to the defensive side of the ball.

"Kelin Johnson seems to get a pick or two everyday. Charles Johnson is playing well. I wonder if we'll be able to block him when the time comes. I've been impressed with Tony Taylor and the way he's responded to being the hub of the defense and getting everyone lined up. He's a good instinctive ball player. The offensive line has done a nice job with not many missed assignments. It's nice to see those guys that have been together going into their third year," Richt said.

The Bulldogs will return to practice in full pads on Thursday night and Friday afternoon. Spring practice ends with the annual G-Day game April 9 in Sanford Stadium.
