WR Rod Owens is commitment No. 12

With the loss of Chadwick Gray, Florida State desperately needed another wide receiver for the upcoming recruiting class. They got one this past weekend with Jacksonville's Rod Owens.

"I committed in my mind during the FSU-Florida game," said Owens, "but I wanted to take my official visit first... I like the place as a whole. I want to surround myself with good people and be better off."

The speedy wideout was hosted by fellow Jacksonville natives Leon Washington and Tony Carter. That greatly increased his comfort level and made the decision and easy one.

"It's good to hang out with a few Jacksonville guys," he said. "They told me what I have to do and not to let anything interfere with football and school. They told me to stay away from the parties and any kind of trouble."

The 6-foot, 170-pound wideout hopes to be able to wear jersey No. 8 next season. That number was previously worn by cornerback Bryant McFadden, who graduated and will be taken in the April NFL draft.

The all-state receiver had over 13 touchdowns this past season. As far as academics, he carries a 2.6 core GPA and should have no problems qualifying.
