Meyer's News & Notes

PROSPECT WATCH:

Last week began with news that 2005 prospect Alex Ruoff out of Central High School in Brooksville, Florida received his first offer from Virginia Tech. If you remember, RivalsHoops.com first wrote about the 6-foot-7 small forward on January 16th in a story titled: "Ruoff: Sleeper Prospect in Florida." Ruoff will play this summer for the Tallahassee Wildcats (Adidas).

Dale Van Wright, a 2006 prospects from Houston, already has an offer from Baylor. The 6-foot-6 small forward is nearly averaging a triple double for his high school team with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 9 assists. He will play for Houston Elite (Reebok) this summer.

Speaking of the Houston Elite, they are stocking up with top prospects for this summer's circuit. 6-foot-11 small forward Ricky Sanchez is coming to Houston to play for the Elite and then attend high school in Texas. Sanchez is now ranked No. 29 in the latest rankings for the class of 2005. Coach Rick Nelson also has Gerald Green and Jovan Adams, No. 17 and No. 20 respectively in the new Rivals100, set to play for his squad. Green has offers from a multitude of schools, UCLA being the latest to offer, and Adams reported to RivalsHoops.com that he is leaning towards Florida. He has also recently stated that DePaul and Oklahoma are favorites as well.

New Jersey 2005 prospect Brandon Costner moves from No. 27 to No. 18 in the Rivals100 for the class of 2005. The skilled power forward boasts offers from Kansas, N.C. State, Indiana, Michigan, UCLA, and Seton Hall.

German native Edwin Ofori-Attah from Statesville, North Carolina scored 68 points in his last regular season game for Statesville Christian High School. Earlier in the year, he set the North Carolina single game scoring record with a 71 point performance. South Carolina is showing strong interest in the athletic shooting guard, who is the German Federation nominee for the Hoop Summit Game at the Final Four.

There was quite a bit of action for the Georgetown Hoyas this week as they received a commitment from 2005 prospect Alfred Aboya, a 6-foot-8 Cameroon native. The Hoyas also hosted Belgium native Jose Garcia, No. 60 in the Rivals100, on an unofficial visit.

Four Pac 10 offers (Arizona State, Oregon State, Washington State, and USC) are already in for 6-foot-8 2005 prospect Jerry-Davon Jefferson. Jefferson is now ranked No. 79 in the Rivals100 for the class of 2005.

2005 Utah prospect Brayden Bell, No. 50 in the Rivals100, is receiving serious looks from coast to coast. Louisville really likes the skilled 6-foot-10, 250-pound power forward. They have been in to see him play three times this year.

Remember the name Chris Kellerman. The 6-foot-7 small forward has skills and is hitting 43 percent from the three point line. Right now he is a top mid-major prospect, but if he gets stronger and a bit more athletic over the summer, he will turn into a high major prospect.

Downers Grove South (Ill.) High School point guard Bryan Mullins set the school's steal record for a season, averaging 5 steals per game. Mullin's, who has quite a few mid-major offers, just missed out on the Rivals100 for the class of 2005.

SHOE WARS:

Reebok, under the leadership of Sonny Vaccaro and Chris Rivers, is making a strong push to gain sponsorship of top AAU teams. The Magnolia Stars of Coach Thomas Billups in Jackson, Mississippi have switched from Nike to Reebok. The Alabama Challenge will now be the Alabama Reebok Challenge. And Mark Komara's Southeast Pump & Run (Adidas) is now the Southeast Elite (Reebok). In addition to these older teams, Reebok is targeting the teams of the top 2006 and younger prospects.
