Hoyas in DC Pro City Kenner League, Day 10
Premium Court message board, more on the Georgetown Hoyas who participated.August 3, 2014 - The 2014 Nike Pro City Kenner League wrapped up its regular season on Saturday, boasting play or go home action as well as jockeying for seating. Below is a game, several player evaluations and on our
At page bottom is a schedule for today's quarterfinal play, as originally reported here.
Oohs and Aaahs 89 Tombs 67
Oohs and Aaahs rode the Maryland Terrapin duo of Robert Carter and Richaud Pack's 20 and 18 point respectively to victory. The victors led by 20 at the half.
Pack, a redshirt senior transfer and Carter, who has transferred to Maryland as a junior, displayed veteran leadership, never taking the pedal off the proverbial metal. Oohs and Aaahs go into the playoff round possible the league's hottest team.
Tombs got 23 points from Hoya frosh L.J. Peak, who also went 0-4 from the free throw line. Class/teammate Isaac Copeland finished with 22 points for Tombs, who did not make the post season.
Mike Morsell - 6'4", 206 pound freshman swingman, Towson, Oohs and Aahs - Morsell is much more comfortable attacking the tin now, yet can still pull up. Has gained strength and weight.
Needs to play hard all the time; not take sequences off. That includes defensively.
DCX 96 Clyde's 76
Going into the day's second contest, it was assumed DCX was out of playoff contention. Yet due to league parity, a win actually would allow bonus round consideration for Lang Reese's team. They rose to the challenge (see real-time tweet), ultimately securing the tournament's 8th seed.
Georgetown's Aaron Bowen stepped up, finishing with a game high 24 points, though his charity stripe work wasn't good; if he sank those, Bowen could have had around 30. Teammate Bradley Hayes logged 17 points, while incoming GW player Darian Bryant scored an impressive 19 points. Corey Spence scored 14 points, going a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line - all of these players were aggressive. Davon Usher poured in 19 points, on three balls and dunks.
Hoya freshman Paul White scored 23 points in what was likely his best Pro City Kenner League performance for Clyde's. Classmate Tre Campbell finished with 15 points.
Darian Bryant - 6'5", 220 pound freshman swingman, GW, DCX - Having migrated from an early high school power forward, a position in part played due to team necessity, Bryant is now a swingman and shows it. Don't think he doesn't have a nice step back, gets into the lanes and is willing to finish over bigger players.
Should continue his all around perimeter work, including developing a stop and pop.
Premier Athletics 92 Symonds 84
This contest was for top of the food chain, playoff seating - the winner would be ranked number one in the playoffs. Premier used a bevy of professional players to grind out a victory.
Corey Allmond scored 18 points, 15 in the second half for Premier, impressive as he arrived to the game late. The ever-competitive Andrew Washington paced all scorers with 26 points, while Hillary 'Pops' Hailey scored 14 points. Mercyhurst University standout Sean Beins contributed 17, much needed points.
Curtis Symonds, Jr. led Symonds with 16 points, and was key in their second half mini-run. Eugene McCrory had 12 points, while soon-to-be ODU forward Javonte Douglas dropped 14 points.
Javonte Douglas - 6'6", 200 pound junior swingman, ODU, Symonds - Javonte is a slasher, one who transfers into ODU from the College of Central Florida. Goes hard, competes.
Must get stronger to take and give bumps.
Team Takeover 90 Lincoln Park 81
In a curious twist, these two teams play today in quarterfinal action. Yesterday evening Takeover prevailed against Lincoln Park, the latter absent its dynamic, difference making point guard, Dele Ojo.
Georgetown seniors Jabril Trawick and Mikael Hopkins each scored 21 points, but it was Villanova sophomore Josh Hart who stole the show, finished with 29 points.
Pierre Johnson grinded his way to 14 points, while Dante Nichols had a Lincoln Park leading 18 points.
Josh Hart - 6'5", 205 pound sophomore swingman, Villanova, Team Takeover - Displayed the shooting work he's engaged win, while also cleaning the glass, defending, finishing and hustling, as usual. Looks like he'll be taking a step up this year for the Wildcats.
Once he gets that left shoulder equal to a defender, watch out, due to his strength. Needs to develop the same capability patting with his left. Can hit spot up threes, but must illustrate the capacity to stop and pop as well.
Pro Destination Updates:
Corey Allmond - 6'2", 180 pound guard - Has a guarantee in Canada. Is also exploring options in Europe, including Switzerland and Sweden.
Hillary 'Pops' Hailey - 6'6", 200 pound swingman - Played in Nova Scotia last year, where he still runs a basketball camp. Is trying to return to a European destination.
Davon Usher - 6'6", 197 pound swingman - Lefty starred at Delaware last year and signed Friday with the Mac-Energy Rogeto Sharks of Italy's second division.
