Peters Takes Special Day to the Next Level with MSU Commit

It was a huge day in Starkville as Mississippi State raked in eight commitments, seven of which came from the class of 2015. There was none bigger, however, than Rivals 100 safety Jamal Peters who shocked the state by committing on his trip to Big Dawg Camp.

"I expected to come up here and commit," Peters said. "Johnthan Banks was one of the main reasons. When I talked to him, it made me want to come to Mississippi State and follow in his footsteps. He was teaching me how to sink my hips and be aggressive today, he really worked us pretty good. He told me that I should wear #13, but I told him I would wear my own number."

For Peters, it hasn't been much of a question on where he would end up. Since the past summer, he's been holding the Bulldogs near to his heart and despite releasing several different leaders over the course of the last few months, the Bulldogs were always his favorite, he said. In the end, the coaching staff was too good to pass up.

"The coaches make it feel like home here," Peters said. "They make it feel just like Bassfield so I just had to pull the trigger and commit. We've got all the top players in Mississippi so I might as well commit. I had it in mind for a long time just waiting to get up here."

"They treat you like family and that's where I want to be. The relationship coach Hughes has with my momma is a big factor.

Peters is one of the top players in the country but he still put his talent to the test by working out against the rest of the crew in Starkville. The Bassfield star spent time with both the receivers and the defensive backs as the coaches try to get a feel for where he can help the team most.

"The receiving coach and DB coach are debating where I'm going to be," Peters said. "They told me that I could take my pick and I could even play both but I want to play safety. I like defense over offense. I'm trying not to play linebacker, I'm trying to keep my weight down and not eat!"

As for his team this coming season, Peters has a lot on his and the Yellow Jackets shoulders as they try to win their third-straight State Championship in 2A.

"We've got to have leadership. We've got the same offense we've just got to fill some spots in the defense and we'll be good. We're ready to three-peat."

Now that Peters is officially committed he said fans won't have anything to worry about moving forward. He's now looking to finish out the class of 2015 in style.

"It's going to be special in the class of 2015 so people better get ready. I'm going to take my official visits but I'm 100% solid with Mississippi State."
