Five-star Cameron Robinson picks Alabama

The University of Alabama secured its left tackle of the future when Cameron Robinson, five-star prospect from West Monroe (La.) High School, announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide. His choice came down to the only schools he considered throughout his recruitment, Alabama and LSU.

Robinson becomes commitment No. 6 for Alabama on the offensive line for 2014. He is the first left tackle prospect in the class. Robinson's commitment will strengthen Alabama's lead as the No. 1 team in the Rivals.com national team recruiting rankings. He is the third player from Louisiana to commit to the Tide (Cameron Sims, O.J. Smith) making Coach Billy Napier's first year as Alabama's receivers coach and area recruiter a special one on the recruiting trail.

Robinson made several trips to Tuscaloosa and Baton Rouge throughout his recruitment. The most important trip may have been to Alabama in June when he spent four days in Tuscaloosa participating in the camp, spending time with the coaches and getting accustomed to the surroundings. He visited LSU in July, but he returned to Alabama again in August for Alabama's final scrimmage.

Alabama has signed five of the past six No. 1 recruiting classes in the country, but Alabama hasn't landed many top 10 overall prospects. Andre Smith was the first top 10 player to commit (No. 2 overall) in 2006 since Rivals initial rankings in 2002. Smith was recruited by former head coach Mike Shula.

Nick Saban has signed five top 10 overall players since he took the reigns as the head coach in Tuscaloosa. The first coming in 2008 with the signing of Julio Jones (No. 4 overall). The following year Alabama landed D.J. Fluker (No. 3 overall) and Trent Richardson (No. 6 overall).

The other two came in 2011 in Cyrus Kouandjio (No. 4 overall) and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix (No. 7 overall). Alabama's slew of top 10 picks had much success at the college level and been rewarded with high NFL draft picks. Smith, Jones, Fluker and Richardson were selected in the first round. Kouandjio projects as a first rounder in 2014. Clinton-Dix is a first team All-American.

Robinson ranks as the nation's No. 3 overall prospect. He will have a chance to prove himself at the Under Armour All-America game in January. It's safe to say he will not lose his place among the nation's best, and only a chance to enhance.

Robinson is not the only top 10 player the Tide staff is hoping to sign in this recruiting cycle. Alabama remains the favorite for Marlon Humphrey, five-star cornerback from Hoover High School in Ala. Humphrey is the No. 5 player in the country. Alabama is also in the final three for Da'Shawn Hand, five-star defensive end from Woodbridge High School in Va., who ranks as the top overall player. Alabama remains in the hunt for Leonard Fournette, five-star running back from St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, La. Fournette won't reveal his favorites, but many expect his decision to come down to LSU and Alabama.

ESPN announcements have been quiet friendly to the Crimson Tide. There have been a few players who have gone elsewhere, but for the most part it has been in Alabama's direction. Cameron Sims also announced his commitment via ESPNU. Several players in the 2013 class announced on the network including Derrick Henry, Dee Liner and Alvin Kamara. Julio Jones, and Amari Cooper also announced their commitments on ESPN.
