Baldwin excited to be a Bulldog
With College Football always evolving, there has become a tremendous importance on special teams and no one puts more emphasis on that importance than Mississippi State Head Coach Dan Mullen.
Mullen added to that strength with the addition of 2014 long snapper Joel Baldwin Wednesday as the senior-to-be pledged his allegiance to the Bulldogs with a commitment to walk-on next season.
"This summer has been a great experience with traveling to each school and seeing how each program is different in their own way," says Baldwin. A big part of my recruitment has been my new coaches, especially my long snapping coach, Chris Rubio."
With the addition of a quality snapper, Bulldog fans can rest assured they are also getting a great person according to his coaches.
"I'm excited for Joel to get the opportunity to play in the SEC, I know that's his goal," head man Trent Hammond remarks. "MSU is getting a heck of a snapper and a great kid."
"He's a smart kid who works hard and best of all is a good person," says offensive coordinator John Keith. "I'm excited to have players being able to continue playing at the next level and represent our program".
Tupelo High has consistently produced elite level talent like former Bulldog and Miami Dolphin receiver Chad Bumphis and current State defensive tackle, P.J. Jones. Baldwin continues that tradition this season.
"He is, by far, the best long snapper I have been around since I've started coaching," Keith proclaims. "He has tremendous upside because of his frame and being a multi-sport athlete he hasn't hit his potential in the weight room."
As for this fall, Baldwin reports that he is more than thrilled about the prospects of a solid senior year with the Golden Wave and making the short trip to Starkville on Saturdays.
"I think we are going to have a good team this year," says Baldwin. "I'm also looking forward to getting towards State's campus and start working on becoming the starting snapper."
The future is bright in Starkville and the special teams might be getting even brighter as Baldwin has taken notice of the ever-productive recruiting efforts in that area.
"I love the direction that State is heading, and (2014 kicker commit) Logan Cooke is a friend of mine and has the potential to be an All-American," Baldwin says boastfully. "I'm extremely excited and looking forward to having a great career at State."
