Jamal Adams talks favorites, upcoming visits
Lewisville Hebron defensive back Jamal Adams is not afraid of competition. In fact, Adams welcomes all challenges. The Rivals100 member has been a regular participant in top camps around the Lone Star State, and last weekend he showcased his talents at Soldier Field in Chicago as a competitor in the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by Under Armour.
Adams remains one of the country's top prospects, and recently the 6-0, 199-pounder cut down his lengthy list of scholarship offers to 12 finalists - Arkansas, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA and USC.
"They have great opportunities for me, great fits, great coaching staff and I definitely see potential in them getting to the championship and winning a national title. Those were the main factors," Adams said.
Adams will visit Florida on June 14. At some point this summer, he's hoping to get to Ohio State, Arkansas, Ole Miss and Southern Cal. On June 2, the blue-chip safety was in Austin as a spectator during UT's first camp of the summer.
"It was great. I definitely had a lot of fun down there, getting to chill with Quandre (Diggs) and all of them, getting to hang with all the players and see what they go through in their college life in the summer," Adams said. "Really, just talking to all the coaches was really cool - they show me love every time I go down there. They're definitely one of the highest schools on my list."
Adams has no actual order among his 12 favorites, but there has been speculation that Texas, Florida and Texas A&M all sit near the top of his list. He's been to UT and A&M recently and he has close ties to Florida (Joker Phillips is his godfather). Adams admits that he likes all three programs, but he also notes that he's in no hurry to rush into a decision and he plans to give all the schools on his list of favorites equal consideration.
"All three of them are definitely high on my list. We'll just to wait and see," Adams said.
A personable young man who is quick to engage other top prospects at the camps he attends, Adams has developed friendships with many of the top players in the state, guys like Jerrod Heard, Nick Harvey and KD Cannon. The spent group a lot of time together in Chicago and while the prospects don't necessarily give strong recruiting pitches to one another, Adams said they enjoy competing against one another at elite camps like the Five-Star Challenge.
"We're all like brothers. We support each other wherever we go," Adams said. "I come out to these camps to have fun, get to know the guys, top prospects. I've been to a lot of Rivals camps. I show out every time and just like to compete hard, really."
Adams says there's a strong chance that he'll return to Austin at some point this summer for an unofficial visit, and he lists his relationship with UT defensive backs coach Duane Akina as one of UT's strongest selling points.
"It's just a great fit with him and would be a great opportunity for me as a freshman. We definitely have a great relationship," Adams said. "A lot of coaches hit me up and wished me good luck and safe travels. He definitely did too. He and coach Mack Brown always check up on me. It's definitely a great relationship."
A four-star prospect, Adams is ranked No. 39 on the Rivals100 and he's ranked as the nation's third-best safety prospect.
