Right Down the Street
Kentavious Street, defensive end for Rose High School in Greenville is a Rivals.com five-star and has garnered more offers since we first talked to him in February.
Street told PI then that he had offers from East Carolina, Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Old Dominion, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech. When we contacted him for a second interview he had added Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Vanderbilt.
He is very familiar with East Carolina University because he and his mother live in the city that hosts the school.
"I've lived in Greenville with my mom for about one year. We moved here from Georgia. I have gone to three ECU games during this past season," he said. Moreover, the 6-foot, 4-inch 255 pounder has had the opportunity to meet Head Football Coach Ruffian McNeill. "I love how the school is down to earth and how Coach Ruff is more like a big brother than a coach. I can commit to him, which is something I don't have with other coaches. I really love that."
We asked him to catch us up on how things are going with him and ECU. "Things are great with ECU. I plan to visit for spring practice and I hope to watch games there during the fall," he said.
Linebacker Coach John Wiley is recruiting him for the Pirates.
"I've met with Coach Wiley many times on campus," he said. "He told me that they want me to do a little outside linebacker, stand up and rush the quarterback and to play defensive end. Sort of like a Terrell Suggs technique. They want me to emphasize the rush."
He plans to visit North Carolina State before the end of March, Virginia Tech around April 13, and Georgia and Georgia Tech in May.
"I've been invited to compete in the Under Armour Combine in Richmond, Virginia on April 13. So that's why I'm visiting Virginia Tech," he added. "I don't plan to go to Vanderbilt until I've been able to develop a relationship with the head coach."
He also has plans to compete in the U.S. Army National Combine. He worked out at the combine last year. Rivals.com wrote of him after the combine: "Street took home Combine MVP honors after being unstoppable in one-on-one competition and putting up ridiculous testing numbers that included a 35.5-inch vertical and a 4.8 range 40-yard dash."
"The combine humbled me and showed me how much skill I have," said Street. "I learned that my technique was wrong and that I needed to use my hands more. I've been focusing on that in workouts. My Head Coach was an O-lineman. He knows all the techniques for the O-line. So he's working out with me after school on where my hand placement should be."
He competed in an ECU camp last July
In the 2012 football season Street recorded 13 sacks and 93 tackles. PirateIllustrated asked him to describe his skills as a defensive end. "I'm mainly a pass rusher. I like to get on the edge and work my moves on a slow tackle," he said. "Sometimes I play outside linebacker and drop back into zone coverage." Is there anything he needs to improve on? "I want to work on my conditioning and my speed, but mainly conditioning because I've been getting tired in the fourth quarter."
