Army Bowl: Mathis remains with Huskies
After months of taking visits, looking at other programs and considering all options, the four-star defensive end from Upland, Calif. committed again to the Huskies during Saturday's U.S. Army All-American Bowl. "I'll be going the next four years to Washington," Mathis said.
There were numerous factors that aided Mathis' decision. One was his strong relationship with Washington assistant coach Tosh Lupoi, one of the top recruiters in college football.
"I have a good relationship with all the coaches, but Tosh opened up and talked about more than just football," Mathis said. "He talked about life and stuff with me."
The commitment of Mathis, ranked as the No. 11 strongside defensive end and the No. 167 prospect in the 2013 class by Rivals.com, is big for the Huskies, especially because it adds another four-star to their class.
Mathis becomes the seventh four-star prospect committed to Washington this recruiting cycle.
Florida State and LSU had shown new interest, but Mathis said upon arrival at the Army game that he felt it was time to make his decision at the game and focus on only that school leading to signing day.
