Southern Miss preview

Mississippi State faces its first true road test of the season when it heads to Hattiesburg Saturday afternoon for a 4 p.m. tip against Southern Mississippi.

Saturday's contest will be broadcast on WKBB-FM 100.9 and WXWX-FM 96.3. Live audio will be available to HailStateTV subscribers at www.hailstate.com/hstvlive.

Saturday's contest will be the 39th meeting against the Lady Eagles. USM holds a 21-17 overall advantage, but MSU has won four straight and nine of the last 12.

Vic Schaefer's squad brings a 3-4 record into Saturday's trek to Reed-Green Coliseum. State returned home from a Thanksgiving-week trip to Mexico and posted its best shooting percentage of the season (48.1) to defeat Savannah State 70-55.

"I'm excited to get our team on the road and see how they respond. I don't think we played particularly well against Savannah State, and I think our kids realized that," Schaefer said. "I'm eager to see how we respond on Saturday, but I'd be surprised if we don't respond in a really good way."

Redshirt sophomore Carnecia Williams and sophomore Kendra Grant had outstanding performances in Wednesday's victory.

Williams paced the Bulldogs with a career-best 26 points, her first double-figure scoring game. Grant collected the first double-double of her young career, hauling in a personal-high 15 rebounds to go along with 16 points.

Grant has scored double figures in six of the team's seven games to post a team-high 15.3 scoring average. The Richland, Miss., native's tally rates ninth in the SEC and second-highest by a league sophomore.

Martha Alwal has also enjoyed a strong start to her sophomore season, averaging 14.3 points and 9.1 rebounds. The Worthington, Minn., native has been impressive at the free-throw line, netting 88.9-percent of her attempts to lead State to an SEC-best 76.0 percent.

Southern Miss returns home with a 3-2 record after posting an 88-71 road win against Florida A&M on Wednesday.

Tanecka Carey scored 39 points in the contest to take the team scoring lead at 16.0 ppg. Jameirra Faulkner and Jerontay Clemons are averaging 13.6 and 13.4 points, respectively.

Clemons also paces the Lady Eagles on the boards with 7.8 per contest.
