Awards rolling in for Jones
The awards are starting to roll in for Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones.
One day after winning the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week Award, the Columbus junior was tabbed the SEC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Saturday's 41-20 win over Missouri.
It was a performance Bulldog fans will no doubt be talking about for a while.
Head coach Mark Richt certainly will.
"Jarvis is a great football player, an All-American and he may be the best football player in America. I'll be honest with you, he strained his groin in the middle of the week and really couldn't move around very well," Richt said. "We were just hoping he would be able to go. It bothered him the whole game. I know it might be hard to believe that but he sucked it up, played the whole game and made the very big plays when we needed him to the most. That's what great players do."
Along with his nine tackles, Jones was credited with two sacks, an interception he returned for 21 yards, two forced fumbles and five quarterback pressures to spark the Bulldogs' win.
The 2011 All-American brought back his interception 21 yards to the Tiger 1-yard line to set up one of the Bulldogs' fourth quarter touchdowns. On the next series, Jones sacked Missouri quarterback James Franklin and forced a fumble that led to Georgia's fifth and final touchdown.
Jones has 16.5 sacks over his last 16 games and is leading the Bulldogs with 17 tackles this season.
