Fant earns first offer
Bowling Green HS junior wide receiver Nacarius Fant couldn't have picked a better night to have a breakout game.
Ever year, Sept. 1 is like a mini-holiday for college football coaches. It's the day when programs can finally gear up and contact the top targets on their recruiting boards.
For seniors, Sept. 1 signifies when coaches are finally allowed to call them, while juniors can begin receiving personal correspondence (such as letters) from interested programs.
So when Fant caught a school record 15 passes for 239 yards and a touchdown on Aug. 31, against Louisville powerhouse St. Xavier, you could say his big performance came at the perfect time.
The breakout game likely played a big part in the Class of 2014 star already landing his first scholarship offer, from Big Ten program Illinois.
"I've talked to their (Illinois) tight ends' coach," Fant said. "They've told me to work hard, keep working on my grades.
"They said they want to come check a game out when they get the chance."
The 5-foot-11 junior said he also has interest coming in from WKU, Ohio State, Oregon, Louisville, Kentucky, and Cincinnati, among others.
He named WKU assistant coach Walt Wells as one coach he's already heard from, adding that he was in the stadium to see his hometown school WKU's 49-10 blowout win over Austin Peay.
"They (WKU) are gona be tough this year," Fant said.
The Class of 2014 wideout gives credit to his Bowling Green coaches for year-to-year improvement on the field.
"They teach us footwork, how to use our hands well, all the little things that count," Fant said. "I feel like usually if I can get space from the corner, I've got good enough hands to catch the ball."
When it comes to choosing a school, the junior star already knows one factor he's looking at.
"Relationship with the coaches," Fant said. "I'll take several visits to check out campuses, get a feel for the schools I'm looking at.
"But relationship with the coaches is big, in the end it's whatever fits me best. I probably will look at a program that's more of a passing team too, that's important."
