Riley readies for big year
The big 6'4" frame of West Jefferson High, Harvey, La., standout Draper Riley might have had a down 2011 season, catching just six passes for 73 yards, but his off season workouts and showings in 7-on-7 have landed him several offers and a Rivals 3-star rating.
"My junior season was a down year for me," Riley said. "I've been working hard this summer, trying to get biggest, faster, and stronger. I ready to show what I can really do this season."
Riley has not yet camped with any schools, but did attend the LSU junior day, while getting invites from Louisiana-Lafayette and ULM. His only camp will be later in the summer at Southern Miss, one of the three schools that he currently holds offers from along with McNeese State and Memphis.
The lack of offers though doesn't deter him from sticking to his plan.
"My plan all along has been to commit at the end of the season," he said. "I'm good with waiting to see what all offers are made and committing then. I'm looking for a great atmosphere and a place with good academics. I'm willing to go where ever I feel the most comfortable."
In addition to being a solid physical player on the gridiron, Riley uses his big frame on the hardwood. Last season he averaged 8.3 ppg and 5.9 rebounds in the ever tough 9-5A district that included state semi-finalist Brother Martin. Despite his success in basketball, he said his future is 100% football.
