Horns secure TE commitment

The Texas Longhorns secured an early commitment at the tight end position when Durham Smythe committed to UT back in March. The UT coaches have evaluated a number of other players at the tight end position in recent months and Texas has now picked up another commitment for the 2013 class.

Butte Community College (Orville, CA) tight end Geoff Swaim took an official visit to Texas that wrapped up on Tuesday. Shortly before heading back to California, Swaim met with the Texas coaches, including Mack Brown, and a scholarship was extended. Swaim wasted little time in adding his name to the Texas commitment list.

"This morning, about 11:15, I met with coach (Bryan) Harsin, coach (Bruce) Chambers and coach (Mack) Brown," Swaim said. "We were going over the visit, how I felt about Austin and Texas. We talked about what kind of role I would have in the team. They thought I could take a leadership role since I'm a JUCO guy. We talked about that for 20 minutes or so. Basically they said it comes down to they like me as a person, they like my character. They thought I could help them there so they offered me a full scholarship. To me, it's a pretty incredible dream come true."

During the visit, Swaim wasn't sure if Texas would extend an offer. He knew that the interest on behalf of the UT staff was sincere based on the fact that he was being brought in for a visit, but Swaim didn't know how the weekend would unfold.

"When they fly you out, you pretty much know they're serious. I'm from California, so they're not just giving you the time of day when they recruit you," Swaim said. "You don't ever want to get your hopes up too much. But in the back of your mind you're hoping they'll offer you.

"When they said it, that they were going to offer a scholarship, it was incredible. Unreal. I'm extremely grateful for this opportunity. I'm going to work hard for Texas."

The 6-5, 256-pound Swaim is known as a tight end that can specialize in blocking assignments. He feels he can also help UT as a receiver in certain situations, and Swaim is willing to do a little of everything once he steps foot on the Texas campus.

"What I think I bring personally, I bring work ethic, good attitude. I'm not a selfish player" Swaim said. "Texas is all about winning. That's all that matters.

"What I bring, is a hard-nosed ball player. I'm really physical. I love to hit, but I can catch a pass. I bring physicality, a toughness, a good attitude."

Texas plans to use Swaim in a variety of ways.

"What we talked about, they want me to come in and play tight end, H-back and fullback. At JUCO, I do a lot of shifting, a lot of motions, which is what Texas does. They said they can line me up at tight end, where I can work on the defensive end to get an edge. They can motion me to fullback, to wing, I can get in the flat and catch the ball. I feel like I can establish the run, set the edge, catch in the flat, but predominantly I'll help as a blocker."
