Florida DT hearing from Eagles
Derrick Calloway is a defensive tackle from Florida that is starting to generate a lot of attention in recruiting circles. The 2013 prospect is claiming several offers and Boston College is one of a few others showing interest.
At 6-foot-1 and 294-pounds, Calloway is a defensive tackle from Bradenton (Fla.) Manatee that has the ability to rush the passer and stuff the run.
"I think I can do both," Calloway told EagleAction.com this week. "I can be a pass rusher but when teams run the ball I think I can close the hole."
This year Calloway registered 59 tackles from his spot in the middle of the defensive line and he has helped Manatee to a big season. He and his teammates take on First Coast on Friday evening for the state championship.
Calloway hasn't had much of a chance to visit schools yet because he has been so focused on his season.
"I'll probably start doing more of that next year," he said.
Calloway is claiming offers from Iowa State, South Florida, Central Florida and West Virginia. He also said Boston College is showing serious interest.
"I've been getting letters here and there from them," he said of BC. "I talked to them around the time when they first came in during the spring and they've been sending me a lot of stuff."
If an offer comes from the Eagles, Calloway will pay a lot of attention.
"BC would be pretty good," he said. "I've heard good things about them. Actually my auntie was telling me good stuff about them."
One thing that could be a factor in this is location.
"Location, I don't think it matters a whole lot but my mother lives down here in Florida and I would like to visit her whenever that's a possibility.
"Mainly I'm trying to get a good education. That's the main thing for me. Also, I want to go somewhere I can play. Then it's just pretty much whoever makes me feel at home."
