Flashes use a big run to upset the Mountaineers
Carlton Guyton poured in 17 points and Randal Holt had 13 of his own as Kent State took down the West Virginia Mountaineers (1-10) 70-60 in front of a stunned crowd.MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - An early wake-up call didn't slow down the Golden Flashes (1-0) as
Four players racked up double figures and Justin Greene flirted with a double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds. WVU's Darryl Bryant was ice cold and only put up 12 points on 4-13 shooting from the field as the Mountaineers went 2-12 from beyond the arc.
West Virginia led most of the way through the first half (KSU had a brief lead in the first frame) and it wasn't until the first media timeout of the second half that the Flashes were able to wrestle control of the game away. Patrick Jackson tipped a shot in with 14:54 left in the game to give Kent State a 43-41 lead. Kent State was in the midst of a 16-3 run that ended after a made free throw by Justin Manns.
The win marks the first career win for Kent State head coach Rob Senderoff and Greene's eight rebounds pushed him over the 600 career rebound mark, the eighth player in school history to surpass that mark.
The two teams had only met one time before, in the 2004 Postseason NIT tournament when WVU came into Kent (Ohio) and walked out with a 65-54 win. Kent State is now 14-27 against the Big East with the last win coming against South Florida during the 2010-11 season.
Kent State will open up a five-game home stand against Alcorn State on Saturday.
