Notebook: Consistency wanted

Tommy Tuberville is looking for more consistency out of his quarterbacks. The Red Raiders' head coach said Thursday that his signal callers are too often going for low-percentage big plays than the high-percentage completions.

"Our offense is basically a throw offense but, still, it's not a big play offense," he said. "We're not going to score on every play. Sometime we take the throw that might be the big play, but it's a less percentage play. As we go right now, we need to be in more percentage plays."

SWINDALL MOVES TO X

Tramain Swindall has recently moved from Z-receiver to X-receiver in recent days. The senior from Oklahoma City said the transition isn't a big deal, as he's played all four receiver positions during his time at Tech.

"I've played every position here, so I've been around it and basically know every position," he said. "It hasn't been that hard for me to make the transitions to each position. I felt pretty good about that, and it helps me a lot more on the field. I feel like I'm a lot more comfortable and (ready to) go out there and make plays."

ZOUZALIK EXCITED ABOUT RETURN GAME

Inside receiver Austin Zouzalik has been Tech's leading punt returner for the past two seasons. After a disappointing year for special teams in 2010, Zouzalik feels that the coaching staff's new approach and the arrival of eager freshmen will make for a big year in the third phase of the game.

"I feel pretty excited about, because they've been going after it in a whole new direction this year," he said. "Last year people were kind of half-hearted and didn't really want to do it. This year, people are really coming to the meetings, writing stuff down, taking it seriously, and I think it's all the young guys coming in and kind of pushing for spots. It's kind of got the old guys thinking, 'I better get on the bus or else these guys are going to take my spot."

He also had high praise for the freshmen from Wednesday's scrimmage. When asked if he was surprised with anything he saw, Zouzalik expected the young receivers to do well.

"Not really surprised, because I've been seeing the young guys work all summer," he said. "I think they all did really good, especially those outside receivers like (Bradley) Marquez and Derek Edwards. They did really good, came through in some clutch situations."
