Hanks to miss two games
Darius Hanks will miss the Crimson Tide's first two games of the 2011 season in accordance with standard NCAA participation rules, a source close to the situation confirmed to Tidesports.com on Thursday.TUSCALOOSA | University of Alabama senior wide receiver
Hanks started all 13 games for Alabama in 2010, catching 32 passes for 456 yards. He is expected to be one of the team's top receivers in the fall.
As a freshman in 2007, Hanks appeared in the first game of the Crimson Tide season, a 52-6 win over Western Carolina that was also the first game at UA for head coach Nick Saban. He did not play again after that game.
NCAA rules - specifically Bylaw 14.2.6 - allow a student-athlete to be granted an additional season of competition in a case where a student-athlete "participated in a limited amount of competition due to a coach's documented misunderstanding of the legislation or other extenuating circumstances."
Bylaw 184.108.40.206.1 states that a student-athlete who receives such a waiver "shall be withheld from two contests of intercollegiate competition for each contest in which he or she competed."
Hanks, of Norcross, Ga., has 58 career catches for 822 yards at UA.
