Lawson factoring in on the line

In 2008 Eric Lawson was part of the nation's top high school offensive line at Olive Branch (Miss.).

Now two members of that line just completed their redshirt freshman season at Mississippi State. Lawson and Damien Robinson factor into the Bulldogs long term plans on the offensive line.

"(Redshirting) was real good for me," Lawson said. "It's good for every lineman to get redshirted. It helped me learn the schemes and the offense."

The 6-foot-6, 320-pound Lawson wrapped up spring practice working behind senior Addison Lawrence at right tackle.

"(Spring practice) went pretty good," Lawson said. "I tried to get as many reps as I could and work on my technique and get better every day."

Lawson did not receive quite the level of attention during the recruiting process that Conquistador teammates Robinson and Shon Coleman received. But the former three-star prospect earned first team All-State honors and helped Olive Branch reach the third round of the Class 6A State Playoffs as a senior.

Making the move from the highest prep level and into the Southeastern Conference has not been as big a challenge as Lawson even anticipated.

"The speed and the intelligence of the linemen is the only real difference," Lawson said.

Lawson picked up scholarship offers from Memphis and Texas Tech. He was committed to the Red Raiders for over three months before making a signing day switch to MSU joining Robinson.

Now over a year later Lawson is still proud of the choice he made.

"I'm happy with my decision," Lawson said. "I made it and I'm happy I stuck with it."
