Friday Jam Fest: McGary impresses

PITTSBURGH, Pa.- The Pittsburgh Jam Fest got under way Friday night, and there was no doubt that Mitch McGary was the top prospect to set foot in the Peterson Events Center.

Mitch McGary (2012, SYF)

Get ready for the offers to pile up for McGary. At this point he only has offers from Cincinnati and Marquette. But this coming week, West Virginia, Duke, Florida, Florida State and Arizona along with Cincinnati and Marquette are expected to visit McGary at his school. They are going to like what they see.

The lefty is pushing 6-foot-11 at 250-pounds. He runs the floor with passion, is physical, has great hands and can pass and finish with either hand.

I couldn't help but think of Kevin Love while watching McGary. Like Love he controls space and snags rebounds and passes with one hand. McGary physically punishes opponents, plays with great composure with the ball in his hands and fires off outlet passes. McGary isn't nearly the outside shooter that Love is but he is more mobile, a little longer and is more of a playmaker off the dribble in the open court.

His marquee play of the night was a zigzagging coast to coast scamper down the court off a defensive rebound that resulted in a successful 10-foot runner.

McGary, who has the makings of being a NBA big man, is wide open in his recruitment but is most intrigued by Arizona, Florida, Maryland and Texas.

Glenn Robinson III (2012, SYF)

Michigan has a good one in the son of the Big Dog. 6-foot-7, athletic and skilled, Robinson dominated the boards on both ends during periods of his game. He also handled the bal at the point some and scored on slashing drives to the basket.

Adonis Filer (2012, SYF)

A 6-foot-2 playmaking combo guard, Filer was the main catalyst for SYF's attack. He repeatedly broke down defenders and found the open man, finished in the lane and came up with the ball on the defensive end.

Definitely a high major talent, Filer will do a year of prep school at Brewster Academy. Baylor and Oregon State have already offered and Tennessee and Xavier are showing strong interest.

Jeremiah Jones (2012, SYF)

A year young for his grade, Jones will do a year of prep school this coming year. An athletic wing scorer at 6-foot-3 to 6-foot-4, Jones was SYF's top outside shooter on the night.

Indiana State and VCU have offered. Butler and Wright State are recruiting him. And many more offers for Jones are on their way.

Tyler Lewis (2012, Team Loaded)

Extremely talented with ball, Lewis scored off the high ball screen with regularity and as usual passed at a high level. Known more as a driver, Lewis looked great shooting the ball from behind the arc. He will be challenged defensively at North Carolina State, but Lewis will have no problem making positive things happen on the offensive end.

Jaren Sina (2013, Hoop Heaven Heat)

An Alabama commitment, Sina is similar to Lewis in that he is more of an offensive talent than defensive talent at this stage. He has a great feel for moving without the ball and then making plays once he gets it. Much of his scoring came off pull up shots in the midrange, and he did a great job finding teammates on the move.

Michael Frazier (2012, Florida Elite)

Florida has a wing scorer with size and strength on the way in Frazier. Scoring comes easily to him and he is solid in the other aspects of the game. On Friday night he went for a team high 19 points.

Elijah Macon (2012, All Ohio Red)

Macon played with impressive energy Friday night, utilizing his athleticism on both ends of the court. He had several impressive scoring plays off the dribble on the baseline.

Nate Britt (2013, DC Assault)

A promising looking point guard prospect, Britt was powerful off the bounce, finished well and was a presence defensively.

Rodney Bullock (2013, DC Assault)

Looking around 6-foot-7 and still growing, Bullock's best ball is ahead of him. His length is an asset defensively, and he had some nice finishes around the basket.

Charles Tucker and Jaaron Simmons (2013, All Ohio Red 16-U)

In the absence of many of their top teammates, these two guards stood out for All Ohio Red.

Simmons has offers from Dayton and Ohio and is hearing from Xavier, Wisconsin and Iowa.

Tucker doesn't have any offers yet but has Texas, Michigan State, Michigan and Ohio State at the top of his list.
