Doug McDermott Named 1st Team All Valley

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Doug McDermott became the first freshman to be named first-team all-Missouri Valley Conference since 1952, highlighting four Creighton players to pick up honors announced by the league office on Tuesday. McDermott, who also swept MVC Newcomer and Freshman of the Year honors, was recognized alongside Bluejay teammates Antoine Young, Jahenns Manigat and Gregory Echenique.

In all, McDermott was recognized five times on Tuesday. In addition to being named first-team all-MVC, he was named to the MVC All-Newcomer Team, the MVC All-Freshman Team, the MVC Freshman of the Year, and the MVC Newcomer of the Year. He is the first freshman since Wichita State great Cleo Littleton in 1951-52 to be first-team all-Valley, and just the sixth player in league history to sweep the Valley Newcomer of the Year and Freshman of the Year accolades. The Ames, Iowa, native ranks fourth in the league with 14.3 points per game, third in field goal percentage (.509), second with 7.6 rebounds per outing and first with eight double-doubles. He was named MVC Newcomer of the Week a league-record seven times during the 2010-11 season.

Young, a junior point guard from Bellevue, Neb., was named second-team all-MVC after his best season as a Bluejay yet. He leads the MVC in assists per game (4.6), assist/turnover ratio (2.16) and minutes played (1,113), and ranks seventh with 13.6 points per game. He is on pace to become the first player to lead The Valley in assists per game and rank top-10 in scoring since Drake's Curt Smith in 1992-93.

Echenique, a sophomore center from Guatire, Venezuela, has played just 22 games at Creighton but the Rutgers transfer has already made an impact. He earned a spot on The Valley's All-Newcomer Team, and was also selected to the league's All-Defensive Team. Echenique averages 10.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, and ranks second in the league with 39 blocked shots.

Manigat, a guard from Ottawa, Ontario, was named to the MVC's All-Freshman Team. He averaged 5.0 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game while making eight starts among his 31 appearances. Manigat is shooting 41.1 percent from three-point range, including a sparkling 58.3 percent from downtown in the past six games.

Kyle Weems, who helped lead Missouri State to its first Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title in program history, was named the Larry Bird MVC Player of the Year. He was joined on the Valley's first team by McDermott, UNI's Kwadzo Ahelegbe, Bradley's Andrew Warren and Wichita State's J.T. Durley.

Young was named second-team all-MVC along with Evansville's Colt Ryan, Wichita State's Toure' Murry and the Missouri State tandem of Will Creekmore and Jermaine Mallett.

Ahelgebe was named the MVC Defensive Player of the Year, while Wichita State junior Ben Smith was tabbed as MVC Sixth Man of the Year.

Voting was done by the head coaches, beat writers, sports information directors and play-by-play men at each of the league's 10 schools. The All-Bench Teams and Most Improved Teams, voted on by the league beat writers, will be announced on Wednesday. Thursday will feature the announcement of the Scholar-Athlete of the Year as well as the Coach of the Year, while next Monday will see the league's Scholar-Athlete Teams being introduced.

Fifth-seeded Creighton (18-13) opens play in the State Farm MVC Tournament on Friday at 2:35 pm against fourth-seeded Northern Iowa (19-12). The game will be contested at Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.
