Sanders resigns for personal and family reasons

Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini made the news official regarding secondary coach Marvin Sanders on Thursday.

A little over 24 hours after Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson announced that NU was hiring Hoosier cornerback coach Corey Raymond to coach the Husker secondary, Pelini confirmed Sanders departure in a written statement released through the University on Thursday.

"Marvin Sanders has resigned his position on our coaching staff for personal and family reasons," Pelini said. "Marvin has decided the most important thing for him at this time is to take a break from coaching and spend more time with his family.

"Marvin is an excellent football coach, and he has been a key part of our defensive success here at Nebraska. The success of his secondary on the field speaks for itself, and he has a great rapport with his players and other members of the staff.

"I am working toward finding a replacement for Coach Sanders, and we will have an announcement on that once the University hiring process is completed."

While at NU Sanders secondary's were considered some of the best in the country dating all the way back to 2003.

This past season the Husker secondary was regarded as the best in the country, as three members off that unit have been invited to participate in the NFL Combine, led by future first round draft pick Prince Amukamara.

Pelini has yet to announce the status of offensive coordinator Shawn Watson or wide receivers coach Ted Gilmore at this point, but like Sander neither of them played a role in recruiting for the Huskers over the final weeks leading up to signing day and none of them were present with the coaching staff at last night's recruiting dinner in Omaha.

Earlier today HI.com reported Ohio linebackers coach Ross Els is in Lincoln to meet with Pelini to discuss the linebacker opening on his staff.

It is unknown at this time when more information about the future of Pelini's coaching staff will be released.

Pelini said on Wednesday he'll make those announcements when he feels the time is right.
