Ross scores 18 as Huskies win Pac-10 opener

Lorenzo Romar has seen enough of Terrence Ross' game this season to pronounce that the true freshman might be the most talented basketball player on the Washington Huskies team.

Ross, a true freshman from Portland, only showed flashes of his special game in front of fans, that is, until Wednesday night when it mattered most.

Ross scored a career-high 18 points and also grabbed eight rebounds as the Huskies opened their Pac-10 schedule with a 73-67 overtime victory over USC in Los Angeles.

Matthew Bryan-Amaning also scored 18 points and Justin Holiday added five of his 12 points in overtime as the Huskies claimed their fifth consecutive road conference win dating back to last season, which is a new school record.

Romar called it one of the greatest conference wins in his nine seasons at Washington. The Huskies started out in a deep hole, trailing 16-4.

Washington lost to USC by 26 points last season in Los Angeles and wound up going 0-2 against the Trojans.

Ross tied a career-best with four 3-pointers in 26 minutes of play before fouling out with 2:37 remaining in the second half. He was part of a UW bench that outscored USC, 29-7.

Washington (9-3) will take a three-game win streak into its next game at UCLA Friday at 1 p.m. before returning to Seattle for its conference home opener against Oregon on Jan. 6.

After trailing by 12, the Huskies rallied to tie the game at 55 going into halftime.

A crowd of 5,584 was in attendance, many wearing purple as Huskies fans were in the area for Thursday night's Holiday Bowl game against Nebraska in San Diego.

Nikola Vucevic led USC (8-6, 0-1) with a career-high 28 points and 14 rebounds.

The game wasn't shown on television in the Seattle area, however a rebroadcast was scheduled to be shown on the USCTrojans.com website.
